Building a Team as a Small Business

As the owner of a small business, you may be working single-handedly or have a few employees on your team. Maybe you’re considering expanding your business and transitioning into offering more products or services. With this comes an extra workload and possibly the need for more employees. When is the right time to hire?

Don’t Make These Mistakes

There are two mistakes you do not want to make, those being hiring too soon, and hiring too late. If a business hires help too soon, before they are ready to bear the cost of paying another employee, profits can decline, and cash flows can dwindle. If a business waits too long to hire help, their unfinished work can add up and their commitments can be left unfulfilled.

When Should You Hire?

A company should hire new employees when there is enough work to justify more help. Perhaps the company is wanting to expand their services but need a certain skillset that is not yet possessed by the team. This means they will need to hire someone who specializes in that field. Or maybe there’s a great new opportunity, but it’s going to require more work. The company should also be financially stable and able to support the cost of an additional employee.

Before You Hire…

Create a Job Description

- In the job description, be sure to outline the job requirements and expectations. This not only helps you identify the kind of employee you need to hire, whether it be freelance, parttime, or fulltime, but it also helps the applicants know what the job entails.

Compare Your Listing to Others

- Do some research on similar job listings and take note of the perks competitors are offering. By doing this, you can see what applicants are expecting and what you can offer to them in comparison to others.

Post Your Position

- Post your job listing on the company’s website, social medias, and on job boards. There are free job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Handshake that your business can utilize. Indeed is most businesses first option when posting a job. LinkedIn has both free and paid options and Handshake is unlike all the rest since it only targets college graduates.

- Some job boards may charge you to run your advertisement, so make sure you’re able to set aside a budget if you choose one of those.
